Op een niet vermoeden manier heb ik toen kennisgemaakt met het werk van Jan Toorop,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanhellenberghubar.org\/index.php\/projecten\/de-genade-van-de-steiger\/fragmenten-gvds\/joep-nicolas-glazen\/\">Antoon Derkinderen, Joep Nicolas<\/a>, Matthieu Wiegman om er enkelen te noemen.<\/p>\n<p>Later heb er in het boek over de nieuwe Bavo veel aandacht aan gewijd, zowel vanwege het werk van Joseph Cuypers, als van Jan Dibbets en Marc Mulders. Daarna volgden mijn artikelen over het werk van Annemiek Punt en over het naoorlogse balanceren tussen figuratief, decoratief en modern aan de hand van de glazen van Hugo Brouwer en Charles Eyck in het Fatimahuis te Weert. Jan Toorop, <em>Het Apostelraam <\/em>(1913-1915) in de Jozefkerk te Nijmegen (1908-1909), met een ontwerptekening en details van de koppen\u2028van Christus en de engelen. Vanwege het innovatieve karakter maakte dit\u2028werk van Toorop destijds veel ophef. Dit zal zeker te maken hebben gehad\u2028met de omstandigheid dat er in Nederland nog niet zoveel door Beuron be\u00efnvloede glasschilderingen waren te zien.(90) Dit laatste verklaart ook waarom de ornamentele invulling nog sterk op de neogotiek lijkt te zijn afgestemd, al werd hiermee vermoedelijk een emulatie nagestreefd in glas van het Byzantijns ge\u00efnspireerde Beuroner moza\u00efek. Dat de vorm een ander doel dient, blijkt ook bij een vergelijking met het veel minder statische sectieltableau gewijd aan Aloysius in de Nieuwe Bavokathedraal te Haarlem uit 1907 (zie afb. 81).<\/p>\n<p>Het is opvallend dat Plasschaert in zijn monografie over muurschilderingen blind lijkt voor de Beuroner inslag van (onder meer) dit werk. Zelf schreef Toorop hierover: \u2018Maar ik heb er toch genoegen van om het apostelraam op die wijze, liturgisch en alles harmonieus zuiver in aansluiting met de omringende architectuur te hebben gemaakt. Daar moet maar eens een einde komen aan al dat ramengeknoei die onze mooie kerkgebouwen bederven\u2019.(91) Hiermee toonde hij zich een rasecht Violierlid. Herkenbaar in de iconografie zijn aspecten (de blote voeten, de regenboog) die door Nieuwbarn in \u2018Het Roomsche Kerkgebouw\u2019 werden benoemd. Heel karakteristiek voor Toorop is het werken met een verdubbeling van koppen, waardoor het effect van diepte ontstaat zonder doorbreking van de tweedimensionaliteit. Opvallend is verder de totale vulling van de bogen in de ramen met figuren, waardoor geen achtergrond viel op te vullen en er een optimale eenheid tussen voorstelling en architectuur van het venster is ontstaan. In de hi\u00ebratische houding en plooival van de gewaden volgde Toorop Lenz, evenals in de lijnen van het gewaad van de zittende Christus (a). Het Christushoofd is levensecht, maar in zijn symmetrie volledig geconstrueerd naar een ideaal (d). Hoewel er naar de weergave van types is gestreefd, hebben de koppen van de apostelen een individuele signatuur behouden. Van enkele \u2028is bekend wie er model voor heeft gestaan. In de hoofden van de twee engelen heeft Toorop het portret van Miek Janssen verwerkt (b-c). Hiermee nam hij een voorschot op de kruisweg van Oosterbeek, waar hij de combinatie van portret, type en halftype ook in symbolische zin verder zou uitwerken.
